"I never knew that ....it was OK to cry."

"I was always told that ...I had to be big and strong"

"I was always told that ..... the alcoholic was a weak person."

This is some of the mis-information that led to the creation of the BABES program-- a program that shatters the myths and gives children grades K-3 the coping skills they need to live healthy, drug and alcohol free lives.

The 7 week series covers topics such as:

Bows
Hi! I have lots of friends. My little brother Buttons sometimes bugs me and follows me around, but I like him.  I get into trouble because I do not always make good decisions.  I talked my brother into eating cupcakes with me when I knew we were not allowed.  I chose to eat the cupcakes instead of waiting until Mom said I could.  I am learning to make good choices.  Good choices are decisions that do not make someone unhappy or mad.

Do you sometimes make bad choices?

Buttons
Hi! I'm Buttons and I am shy.  I have a sister Bows, who likes to boss me around.   She can be nice, and that is why I like her.  Sometimes I do not feel happy about myself.  When I am sad an unhappy, I have friends to talk to about my problems.  My friends help me cheer up.  They also give me ideas about what I should do.

Do you have someone to talk to when you are having problems?

Myth Mary
Hi! The BABES club usually comes to play at my tree house, because I have lots of  toys.  Sometimes I tell things even when I am not sure they are true.  I sometimes do not bother to find out if the stories are true.  I have the name Myth Mary because I tell myths.  A myth is a story that may or may not be true.

Do people tell you things that you know are not true?

Early Bird
Hello! "Honk, Honk!"  I "Honk" to give my early warning signal.  My early warning signal tells Buttons, Bows, and the others when they are about to do something that will hurt them or others or may even get them in trouble.

Do you sometimes warn your friends when they might do something that will get them in trouble?

Donovan Dignity
Hi kids!  I help the BABES club by giving them good advice.  I tell Buttons and Bows what they need to know so that they can make good decisions.  A good decision is one that does not hurt you or anyone else.  When Myth Mary tells something that is not true, I tell everyone the truth.

Do you have any questions about drugs or alcohol?

Recovering Reggie
Hello!  I am a member of the BABES club.  I once used drugs and alcohol to solve my problems. I did not realize I was hurting my friends and family.  I was also hurting myself.  I learned healthy ways to solve my problems.   I share this information with others.

Do you know any healthy ways to solve problems?

Rhonda Rabbit
Hi! Sometimes when school lets out, I do not want to go home. My mom has a boyfriend that she makes me call "uncle".  He gets drunk and touches me on my private body parts. My private body is the part that is covered by my bathing suit.  I do not like it when he does this.  Sometimes my mom forgets to feed me.  When I cry because I am hungry or sad she sometimes hits me. My brothers and sisters went to live with our grandmother. I wish I could, but my mom says she needs me.  I wish my mom did not do drugs or drink.  I am going to tell my teacher.  I trust her. She will know who to talk to and who can help me.

Some people you can trust are teachers, police officers, and close friends or family that are adults. Do you know someone you trust?
